3 Magical Pressure Points to Relieve Headache, Improve Sleeping Quality

Acupressure has been around for thousands of years in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), it is a kind of treatment that applies pressure by using fingers to specific pressure points in the body.

For minor aches and pains, a trip to the doctor or pharmacy may be unnecessary. Using pressure points is an easy and effective way to relieve your pain. Pressure manipulated by yourself or with someone’s help can be used anywhere and at any time. Let’s pick up these easy-to-use tips to manage our minor aches and pains!

Hegu Point

“Hegu” is the Chinese name of this pressure point – it has four whole pages allocated to it due the vast number of benefits it offers. It is the fleshy spot between a person’s thumb and index finger. This point is prescribed for any pain related to the head and face, including: headache, toothache, sinus infections, redness of eyes, etc.

To massage Hegu, use your thumb and forefinger of the opposite hand, squeeze this area until you feel a mild soreness. Continue to hold that pressure for 10-15 seconds and then release. Repeat as often as necessary throughout the day until you feel that you have evoked a change in the condition from which you are suffering. If you’re pregnant, please consult a professional in TCM before applying treatment on this point.

Wind pool (Fengchi)

Wind pool (Fengchi) – located on the back of your neck, behind your earlobe, toward the top of your neck, and the base of your skull. Use your thumbs to apply a deep and firm pressure toward your skull.

To massage this point, place both of your thumbs on the point, hold your skull with rest of the hands. Massage the by using the thumbs in a circular or up-and-down movement for around 1 – 3 minutes.

Stimulating this pressure point can improve a stiff neck caused by sleeping in an uncomfortable position. It’s also associated with reducing stress and calming the mind.

Inner frontier gate (Neiguan)

Another press point that could help you sleep, is the inner front gate (Chinese – Neiguan point). You can locate this point on the inner forearm, around 3 finger-widths down from your wrist crease. To ease insomnia, use a circular or up-to-down motion to massage the area for around 10 seconds each time. Repeat 10-15 times at one interval. Massage up to 3 times a day.

In addition to improving your sleep quality, it can also help stop hiccupping for kids. But remember to measure 3 finger widths of your baby or kid to locate this pressure point.
