Healthy Eating Tips For the Summer

Many people experience body discomforts as soon as summer arrives. Bloating, fat accumulated from winter months, headaches, insomnia, irritability, restlessness, heart palpitations, etc… What are the reasons behind this? How do we enjoy a healthier Summer?

Summer Eating Tips to Balance Your Body

Traditional Chinese Medicine Pays Attention to the Balance of Yin and Yang.

In Summer, the body is prone to trap heat, muscle tightness, lower appetite, body bloating, mood swings, listlessness, sleeplessness, tiredness, etc. Therefore, during summer time, the diet should be as light as possible, less greasy, less salt, and the amount intake should be smaller too, to reduce the burden on the stomach and intestines, and allow the body to detox after Winter.

That is why, in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Summer is a “yang” season and is associated with the fire element. Fire governs the heart and small intestine. When fire is balanced within the body, the heart governs and circulates the blood properly and the intestines properly digest food. If your body’s hormone is balanced, your moods will be calmer and feel more enthusiastic.

At this stage, if you want to maintain the balance of yin and yang of the human body, you first need to strengthen the aerobic exercise to dredge the meridians. In conjunction with eating more foods that nourish the heart, invigorate the spleen and stomach, pay attention to replenishing body moisture, dispelling dampness, drowning and detoxification.Summer diet to nourish the body, the mind, eliminate bloating, and lose weight!

Fatty, sweet, and high-processed products should be controlled or eliminated. Bitter foods, such as bitter melon, bitter tea, lotus seed …etc., to clear the heart and lower blood pressure, relieve body heat, and invigorate the spleen and stomach.

  • Red Colored Food

Red colored foods are good for nourishing blood circulation systems.
“Red enters the heart”, mulberry, red watermelon, grapefruit, carrot, and tomato that are abundant in summer are great foods for the heart. Other red colored foods, such as red dates, red beans, red barley, red lentils, etc., are beneficial for nourishing blood float, lowering body fat, and improving cardiovascular and blood circulation.

  •  Food that Reduce Water Retention

To reduce bloating and body heat, detoxify the body, and lose weight, you may eat more wax melon, bitter melon, lotus seeds, red beans, coix seed, yam, etc. Winter melon is also a treasure for the whole body, especially winter melon seeds can be used as medicine, as the best body scrub. You can get the most effects when cooking the melons unpeeled, and with the seeds crashed.

Summer time is a great time to treat those discomforts last from last Winter! You can “cure” those winter sickness and adjust your physique in summer by maintaining a good summer diet regiment. Taking advantage of the hottest and most yang qi of the year, get more sun exposure, do more exercise to strengthen the body, and intake less food, you can improve allergies and reduce some chronic diseases that occur in winter, such as chronic bronchitis, asthma, rheumatism, etc.

  •  Yellow Colored Food

Yellow food to invigorate the spleen and stomach. If you want to invigorate the spleen, you may eat more yellow, sweet food, especially grains and roots, such as: brown rice, oats, millet, corn, barley, pumpkin, yellow sweet potato.
